Where to Watch Anime_ Top 16 Best Anime Streaming Sites

The anime industry has always been popular in Japan where it originated but has skyrocketed in the past decade in Europe and the Americas. It’s amazing how it has transformed into an entire culture, affecting not only what people are watching but also how we dress, what we listen to, and even how we do our hair. Anime has started attracting viewers of all ages and backgrounds, and in this article, I’m going to help new and old anime lovers find the best streaming sites to watch anime on.

You can find most anime series online but knowing which high-quality anime website will have the collection you want will make it so much easier. The anime websites I’ve listed in this article have been tried and tested by anime lovers for years – they guarantee a decent watching experience and won’t let you down in the middle of a series marathon!

Before we delve into the list, what exactly is anime?

Anime originated in Japan and describes a specific type of animation made there, often in the form of a tv show or a movie. The first Japanese animation was released in 1917 but today you’ll find several different genres and subgenres of the popular animation style. In the websites we’ve listed below you’ll find a wide array of both classic and brand new anime franchises.

What should you look for in a good anime website?

Any good anime streaming website or streaming platform will have certain qualities such as being able to find and stream a series with ease and will have several different categories to choose from such as drama, action, comedy, and game.

What devices can you use for watching anime?

  • Any smartphone will let you load and watch from anime websites. You can use the internet browser or some sites might have an app you can download too.
  • Tablets and iPads are similar but have the benefit of a larger screen. You can use the internet browser or some sites might have an app you can download too.
  • Laptops and desktops.
  • Streaming devices such as Amazon Fire Sticks or Rokus.
  • Smart TVs and general televisions if using a separate streaming device.

How can I watch free anime?

Believe it or not, there are several websites and anime streaming apps that will let you watch your favorites for free. Many of them are on my list and I’ll make sure to point them out as I list them.

Another trick to watch anime for free is to use a VPN. This will allow you to access certain websites that are only available in Europe or Asia. It’s also handy to note that if you have a Netflix account, Netflix in the UK and Asia have different television shows on them than Netflix in the US does. This way, you may be able to find an anime series that isn’t readily available here.

And now, on to our list of anime websites and streaming platforms:

16. AnimeLab

AnimeLab - Watch Anime Online anime girl

Website: https://www.animelab.com/

App: AnimeLab is accessible across a broad spectrum of platforms: various browsers, select Android and iOS mobile and tablet devices, Roku, Samsung Smart TV, multiple gaming consoles, and more.

Cost: Free with the option to upgrade to a Premium Membership; costs vary based on location.

Let me start off by saying that AnimeLab is not currently available in the United States yet, though there are plans to expand. I came across AnimeLab during my travels and became infatuated with how much was on there and how easy it was to use. You’ll find everything from classic hits to brand new shows, often within an hour after it is broadcasted in Japan. You can watch it with English audio if you prefer, though I like watching it in the original Japanese but with English subtitles. Upgrading to a Premium Membership comes with a lot of benefits like no pre or mid-show advertisements, no simulcast delays, and full access to their catalog, whereas the free membership gives you a limited selection.

15. Anime Planet

Anime Planet anime girl

Website: https://www.anime-planet.com/

App: Not Available

Cost: Free

Since it was established in 2001, Anime Planet has become one of the premier anime streaming sites available. They’ve got an ever growing database of anime and manga with over 40,000 episodes streaming legally right this moment. The database is completely legal and with their licenses they are able to allow viewers like you and me to watch all our favorites without fees and even without many ads. You can browse all of the series’ with ease and also use Anime Planet as a platform to meet other fans like you. I’d suggest taking the time to sign up for the free registration as that will let you track what you’ve seen and read, discover personalized anime and manga recommendations based on what you’ve watched, and even share customized lists of your favorites titles and characters.

14. Masterani

Masterani anime girl

Website: https://www.masterani.one/

App: Not Available

Cost: Free

Often described as “the number one website to stream anime movies and TV shows online for free”, Masterani really is a great platform to binge watch your favorites. Unlike many of the other free websites you may come across, Masterani has an extremely friendly user interface making it easy to find and watch whatever you want. They don’t have a billion pop-ups and ads like the others so that’s a bonus too. It’s one of the fastest anime streaming sites not only in terms of loading and streaming but also in use; because they’ve made it easy by categorizing by genre, release, movies, series, and even a full A-Z list, you can find what you’re looking for in minutes. Each one has a comment and rating section that other viewers have contributed to; you can join in on the convo or use it to get a feel for what to watch. One of my favorite things about Masterani is that you can do all this without registering with their website or submitting any additional information for them to use and flood

13. CONtv

CONtv anime girl

Website: https://www.contv.com/browse-movie/

App: App available for iOS and Android. CONtv is accessible across several platforms: browsers such as Google Chrome, Firefox, or Internet Explorer, Android and iOS mobile and tablet devices, smart televisions, multiple gaming consoles, Roku streaming devices, and more.

Cost: Free with ads. Upgrade to a CONtv VIP membership which lets you watch ad-free for $6.99 a month.

CONtv works something like a broadcasting TV station, letting you watch a number of different anime and manga with some commercial breaks (advertisements) scattered throughout. It’s a great platform to watch original shows and movies, specific genres, comedies, and more. Classic anime, sci-fi, cult films, horror – no matter what you’re into, you’ll most likely find it here; there are over a thousand hours of programming on there! Most of the content you find on there is available for at least a year but sometimes their license expires and series are added and removed to reflect that as with any other streaming service – if that’s the case, you can always contact them and request something specific. Even if you don’t upgrade to a CONtv VIP membership, you should still register since that will let you build your own lists.

12. Amazon Prime Video

Amazon Prime Video anime girl

Website: https://www.primevideo.com/

App: App: Download available for iOS phone or tablet, Android phone or tablet, various gaming consoles, smart TV, Blu-ray player, streaming media player, Fire TV Stick, or Google Chromecast.

Cost: $8.99 a month plus taxes

Amazon Prime Video has a really large catalog of anime series and movies to watch, though one of their downsides is that not all of them are included with your Prime membership. While many of the anime are available at no additional cost, some of the anime must be purchased even with a Prime membership. This is the same concept they have for their other TV shows and movies and can be purchased easily. That being said, I love how Amazon Prime Video supports animations in several languages including Japanese, Korean, French, German, and English – they even have a wide range of subtitles if that’s something that is important to you. The quality is often HD or 4K and is one of the best viewing experiences you’ll come across. One particularly unique feature is that you can create ‘Watch Parties’ on Amazon Prime; this lets you watch movies and TV shows with others virtually and even has a built-in chat feature for people to chat and discuss while they’re watching.

11. Netflix

Netflix anime girl

Website: http://www.netflix.com

App: Download available for iOS, Android, Windows Phone, Playstation, Xbox, Apple TV, Roku, Chromecast, & Amazon Fire TV.

Cost: Pricing for Netflix varies by region. In the United States, Netflix offers three packages: Basic – $8.99, Standard – $13.99, and Premium – $17.99. You get access to their entire library no matter what package you choose. Differences between the packages include the number of screens you can log into simultaneously and whether HD or Ultra HD is available.

Netflix is one of the original streaming sites that rose to fame and one of their greatest features is that their categories are so versatile. You can find movies and TV shows in different languages, genres, themes, etc. and their variety extends into the anime industry. There are tons of anime on Netflix at the very moment and the best part is that they’re all adding and removing series so that there’s something new to watch. There are tons of pros such as the ability to add anime to lists to watch later, easy streaming on various devices, and I love the fact that I can stop watching on my phone and pick up right where I left off on my television. Some of my favorites to watch on there right now are Japan Sinks: 2020, One Piece: The East Blue and Alabasta Sagas, and Dorohedoro.

10. Hulu

Hulu anime girl

Website: http://www.hulu.com

App: Download available for iOS, Android, Windows Phone, Playstation, Xbox, Apple TV, Roku, Chromecast, & Amazon Fire TV.

Cost: There are four plans: Hulu Basic – $5.99, Hulu (No Ads) – $11.99, Hulu Basic + Live TV – $64.99, Hulu (No Ads) + Live TV – $70.99.

Anime watchers in the United States, United Kingdom, Europe, and some parts of Asia have access to Hulu, so one of the immediate cons is that it’s not available in all parts of the world. But if you’re lucky enough to live where Hulu is available, you’ll have access to an array of anime like Saiyuki, Dragon Ball Super, My Hero Academia, and more. That being said, Hulu is not a platform dedicated solely to anime and does not have a very large variety nor is it updated frequently. The videos are extremely high quality and depending on your plan, you can watch them with no ads. There are limited downloads available but not for all shows.

8. Chia-Anime

Chia-Anime anime girl

Website: http://www.chia-anime.me/

App: No app to download but they do have a specific mobile site.

Cost: Free

Chia-Anime has been around for over ten years and I can’t really find much to complain about other than the fact that they don’t have an iOS or Android app. The website is free and easy to use and often has episodes up within an hour of its broadcast in Japan. How quickly and how often they update their database is one of their biggest selling points. There are over 1,000 anime available for online streaming, while some of them have the ability to be downloaded as well. You can choose from comedies, adventure, magic, and more.

7. AnimeDao

AnimeDao anime girl

Website: https://animedao.to/

App: Not Available

Cost: Free

AnimeDao is one of the best anime websites to stream from and I personally love them because of all they offer. First, the UI is super friendly and neat, giving you the option of choosing from a light or dark theme, browsing animations in alphabetical order, bookmarking videos, and even creating lists of your favorites. Users also rate the website very highly when it comes to technical aspects such as loading speeds, video quality, and low bandwidth consumption. AnimeDao has proven to be very reliable, often having an up-to-date stock of content to choose from. The only con that comes to mind is that they don’t allow downloads but if you have a good internet connection that shouldn’t be a problem.

6. Anime Freak

Animefreak TV anime girl

Website: https://www.animefreak.tv/

App: Download available for Android.

Cost: Free, though registering with the website makes using it a bit easier.

You can find the latest anime episodes with ease on Anime Freak. The website is really colorful and bright in true Japanese anime art style and has all of the latest episodes right on the homepage itself. People who use Anime Freak often share that you can watch some truly unique content that is otherwise hard to find anywhere on the world wide web. You can browse animation series by genre, create a list of your favorite animations, and choose from either dubbed or original series versions based on your preference.

5. AnimeHeaven

AnimeHeaven anime girl

Website: https://animeheaven.ru/

App: Not Available

Cost: Free

AnimeHeaven has a large collection of cartoons and animations to choose from, almost all of which is uploaded in high definition format. It’s pretty foolproof to use and the UI makes it really easy to browse series and movies or search for any one in particular. The best part is that the interface for AnimeHeaven is very mobile friendly since it has a clean cut design and very minimal advertisements. In fact, there are no advertisements in the middle of any video, which is a nuisance you’ll come across in some of these other sites I’ve listed. You can download the anime to your Google Drive and then transfer them to your local files, making it super easy to watch on any device of your choosing.

4. KissAnime

KissAnime anime girl

Website: https://www.kiss-anime.ws/

App: Not Available

Cost: Free

KissAnime has somewhat of a cult fan following with some anime buffs swearing that it’s the best platform to stream anime on. It is highly popular with people and many of my friends refuse to watch anime on any other website. I, on the other hand, have not had as great an experience as many other people and this might just be me. First, the pros: they really do have a wide variety of anime genres and subgenres like comedy, action, and adventure, you can choose a high-resolution video to watch, and there are both dubbed and original versions to pick from based on your preference. If you register and sign in, they allow you to download episodes to watch when you don’t have internet access. And now, the cons, or the one major con that really bothered me: there are so many ads. There are ads all over the screen when you go to the website. There are pop up ads when you try to click on a link. There are ads before, during, and after an episode. There are so. many. ads.

3. Crunchyroll

Crunchyroll anime girl

Website: https://www.crunchyroll.com/

App: Download available for iOS, Android, Windows Phone, Playstation, Xbox, Apple TV, Roku, Chromecast, & Amazon Fire TV.

Cost: Free with multiple ads. Three different plans: $7.99/ month for Fan, $9.99/ month for Mega Fan, and $14.99/ month for Ultimate Fan.

Crunchyroll lets you watch anime anytime, anywhere. It’s a legal anime website you can access from anywhere in the world; you can stream on desktops, laptops, mobile devices, various gaming consoles, and many other streaming devices. You can watch your favorite series or movies for free with ads but you’ll need a premium membership to watch without. All of the plans are ad-free, give you unlimited access to the Crunchyroll library, and ensure that you can see the latest episode asap since they’re uploaded to the website an hour after Japan. I love that you can watch your favorite on demand, it’ll keep track of which episodes you’ve watched already and pick up where you left off, and even lets you add helpful reviews on the series’

2. GoGoAnime

Gogoanime anime girl

Website: https://gogoanime.sh/

App: Not Available

Cost: Free

For my readers out of the United States, you’re going to love GoGoAnime because it’s available worldwide unlike Hulu and some other streaming sites. The website is very well organized and has an awesome collection of manga series and films for anime fans of all genres. You can pick from horror, action, drama, cars, kids, games, and more. You can also search by release date or request a video if you can’t find it. If you’re into Chinese animation series, you’ll find several on GoGoAnime; it’s also great if you’re trying to learn Japanese and want to watch it without subtitles since they have non-subtitle versions as well. Other really great pros are that it’s super easy to watch an ongoing series using this free anime site since they load automatically; you can also download episodes to watch when you’re in an area with no network.

1. 9anime

9anime anime girl

Website: https://www12.9anime.to/

App: Not Available

Cost: Free

Those who have been watching anime for years are most likely familiar with 9Anime. I love it for many reasons with one of the main ones being that you can always find the latest episode of your favorite mangas right after the official release. It’s super easy to search for ongoing and upcoming episodes – you can even search for them in order of popularity. You can even filter your search by genre, rating, season, year released, language, and more. It’s super organized and if you can’t find what you wanted to watch, you can even request your anime of choice. Once you do pick what to watch, it’s guaranteed that you’ll watch high-quality, high-resolution videos with very few ads. The only downside to 9Anime that I’ve found is that you cannot download any of the episodes or movies, which means you can only watch it while connected to the internet. This sucks if you’re planning on catching a flight or will be somewhere remote and want to download some episode to watch while you’re there.
